Canelo Shutouts Chavez Jr., Announces Golovkin Mega Bout

The recruitment of hall of fame trainer Nacho Beristain wasn’t enough for Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. to get over the hump as Saul “Canelo” Alvarez decisioned Chavez Jr. over twelve rounds with scorecards of 120-108 across the board. The fight was at a contractual catch weight limit of 164 lbs., the lightest weight Chavez Jr. competed in since 2012, the weight seemed to have affected his performance and stamina (in addition to Alvarez not letting him into the fight).  The fight deteriorated into a sparring session as Canelo, who’s always been more boxer than his knockout highlight reel indicated, didn’t step up the volume in the later rounds against a tentative Chavez.  In arguably the tally up by Michael Buffer ever, Canelo was awarded the unanimous win.  Amid the post fight interview with Max Kellerman, Alvarez announced the mega bout between unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in September.
